SOSKI Progress UPDATE

January 2026 - Chine Log, Sheer Log and Hull Stiffening

Longitudinal stiffening in the form of the chine and sheer logs and intermediate hull stiffening is now bonded in place. The laminated epoxy bonded timbers will ensure that the hull planking will be well supported and that the vessels shape will remain fair and strong.

November 2025 - Frames, Stem-Keel and Water jet pod

The Major components are now assembled and bonded in place. The vessel is starting to take its shape. For the first time the full scale of the build can be seen and all the work to get it to this point is starting to feel worthwhile.

October 2025 - Strong Back and start of frame assembly

A strong back or jig is a timber framework, leveled and bolted to the floor, on to which the main components, consisting of the frames, stem-keel and water jet pod are attached. it ensures that everything remains rigid, level and equally spaced. This helps keep everything fair and true to the design.

May 2025 - Water jet 'pod'

It was decided to manufacture the jet molding as a separate component, this would allow the jet intake plate to be used as a splash within the mold and would ensure that it would fit perfectly within the hull structure. This large composite piece is made up primarily of glass and epoxy but also incorporates a layer of Aramid (Kevlar) for abrasion and penetration resistance. The finished moulding will be tied into the main structure of the vessel, ensuring the power of the water jet thrust is distributed evenly throughout the hull.  Here you can see the mold nearing completion.

January 2025 - Completion of Stem-Keel

In much the same way as the frames were made, the stem-keel was templated from co-ordinates lifted from CAD. 2 layers of 12mm ply epoxy glued and screwed together with staggered scarf joints falling on the frame spacings for extra strength make this the back bone of the build. 

Sept 2024 - Completion of Frames

All frames have been hand templated from co-ordinates lifted from the CAD lofting process and their shape re-created with 3 layers of 9mm ply epoxy glued and screwed together with staggered joins. This allows for good nesting and efficient use of material. The staggered joins fall deliberately on the various vertical and horizontal datums which will make setting up and making future measurments much easier. The frames will be constructed on a jig once all the other components have been made.

March 2024 - CAD Lofting

The final dimensions are now drawn up in CAD software in the three different aspects; profile, half-breadth and body plan. From this, co-ordinates are taken in order to form the templates used to create the various components.

December 2023 - Final Model and Dimensions

Following model testing the third and final model was selected as the basis for the full scale prototype. A measuring jig was created to capture the subtle changes that had evolved since the original model and design. This model version is 30mm wider than the first and 15mm longer and has a faired 'pod' rather than the traditional hull flat for the water jet in order to get it into a better flow of water beneath the boat.

    May 2022 - SOLENT skipper 'SOSKI 25'

    Today, May Day 2022, marks the start of an exciting project I have wanted to undertake for a very long time. I have been drawing boats since I could hold a pencil and have always been lucky enough to have easy access to boating, through my parents, who have owned boats since before I was around.  I have long desired to build a classic style launch, pulling inspiration from the likes of Carlo Riva, Chris-Craft, Van Dam and even J. Samuel White (Miss England) to name a few. Projects that are personal to me have always taken a long time to conceptualise, let alone create. Often driven by cost and time but more importantly an attention to detail which can only be developed with trial and patience over time.  The 7.5m vessel will largely be of plywood construction then sheathed and painted. Potentially allowing for moulds to be taken should there be any interest. Its build name will probably change a few times over the next few years, some perhaps not so polite, but for now it will be known as ‘project: SOSKI’ or ‘Solent Skipper’ to be complete. Ideally it will be powered by around 220 - 300 Volvo Penta horses driving a Hamilton HJ274 waterjet, the latter of which I have already acquired, albeit re-purposed. Hopefully achieving a 30 knots cruising speed.  Today we launched a 1:10 scale prototype, which we tested in Bembridge harbour. It floats! Maybe slightly lower than I wanted it too, though it is a scale tonne heavier than it should be for its size. Its successors will be a kilogram lighter! It’s powered by an RC motor and jet-drive, so we were able to see some of its capabilities. I intend to build a few more models to compare subtle tweaks to the hull. One probably incorporating a stepped hull.  The duration of this process will be 5 years (unless certain events or good fortune reduce this time). The next year will see spare time being spent creating and testing scale prototypes to decide on the final hull form and collecting parts and materials required for construction. Also finishing projects currently underway in our Cowes workshop to clear the space for the main build. The following couple of years will be the build of the main structure followed by a couple of years of machinery, final fit-out and finishing. This will obviously all have to fit around supporting the incredible Diverse Marine team with ongoing lifeboat projects and our other lovely customers.  You never really get the chance to properly thank the people that have taken the time to help you develop your skills, and I have been lucky to have had many great mentors along the way including my Dad and my Granddad, everyone who helped me through my apprenticeship and the years up until now, you know who you are and I thank you all very much.  I look forward to embarking on this adventure, and hope that Nicola and the children will get involved so they will have something to remember and cherish as they grow up. Giving them a taste of something I remember so fondly as a boy. Because there's nothing better for the soul than messing about on boats!
